Meet the Chhattisgarh Farmer Growing Giant 1.7-Foot Brinjals

At over 1.7 feet long, this giant vegetable surprises everyone who sees it. But its size is only half the story. A farmer from Chhattisgarh also made it tougher against pests.

A seed worth saving

When others were turning to hybrids, farmer Leelaram Sahu stayed with a local brinjal variety his family had grown for generations. He believed it held untapped potential.

In 2010, he began saving seeds only from the healthiest brinjal plants. Season after season, he repeated the process, hoping to improve the crop naturally.

Three years later, it paid off

His efforts resulted in Niranjan Bhata, a new variety that stood out immediately for its size, strength and ability to perform well in the field.

The brinjal that turned heads

The fruits regularly grew between 45 and 60 cm long. In some trials, they stretched beyond 1.7 feet, making them one of the longest brinjals around.

The variety showed better tolerance to common pests and diseases. Healthier plants meant fewer losses and greater confidence for growers.

Then came the taste test

The giant brinjal was not just productive in the field. Its soft flesh, fewer seeds and texture made it popular among home cooks.

“It dissolves like butter”

Its soft flesh and fewer seeds gave it a buttery texture when cooked, making it a favourite in kitchens as well as on farms.

From village to nation

Farmers from Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Manipur and several other states started growing Niranjan Bhata, spreading the variety through farmer networks.

For Leelaram, the brinjal is more than a successful crop. It is proof that farmers can improve, protect and pass on valuable seeds for future generations.
